One of our most popular steel products is our cut to size steel rebar. Rebar, or reinforcing bar, is a steel bar length commonly used in the construction industry. It is most often found as a reinforcing material in concrete structures, hence the name ‘rebar’.
Despite their association with concrete, reinforcing steel bar was known in the construction industry well before the appearance of modern reinforced concrete. A century and a half before its invention, cast iron reinforcing bars were used in the construction of Russia’s Leaning Tower of Nevyansk to strengthen the building.
Concrete is a popular building material that is very strong in terms of compression, but lacks adequate tensile strength to be used in taller buildings or for structures which carry tensile loads. To compensate for this shortfall, steel rebar is cast into the centre of the concrete itself. The versatility of cast concrete can be matched by the mild steel rebar, which can be cut and welded to match the profile of any structure so no part of it is without the reinforcement it requires.
